Teaching DVD Converting between units – lengths
We encounter units of measurement in lots of different situations every day. But what do we mean by that exactly? What happens if you want to convert a number directly from centimetres into metres, or vice versa from metres into centimetres?
This film covers precisely this topic, tackling how to perform conversions between length measurements. First the benefits of the metric system are outlined. Building on this foundation, the film then tackles converting between units of length. The units of millimetres, centimetres, decimetres, metres and kilometres are covered, with clear explanations of how to convert between the individual units of measurement. Amongst other things, the basic principle is taught that division is required if you want to convert a smaller unit into a larger one. If you want to go from a larger unit to smaller one, multiplication is required. On the one hand, the film describes the place value board, which is ideal for explaining this topic at primary school level. On the other hand, this topic is then extended to include the unit of measurement tables, which is ideal for explanations aimed at years 6 to 11.
