What is computer science?
Computer science is a science that is essentially concerned with the automated and systematic processing of data and information. Computer science is a combination of information and automation. It`s foundation lies in mathematics and engineering. However, computer science now extends far beyond this and has an impact on all areas of life.
Computer science can be found everywhere:
- Data is transmitted (mobile phones, computers, televisions)
- processes are controlled and regulated automatically (the programme of the dishwasher)
- Data is stored and has digital output (digital cameras, CDs)
- data is changed and calculated (pocket calculators, navigation systems)
Computer science in kindergarten?
Computers, tablets, robots - the digitalisation of our society has long since reached early childhood. Children bring their experiences with these digital technologies into everyday kindergarten life, for example when playing or in their stories. This can and should be picked up in kindergarten, as it is important to accompany children on their way into the digital world and show them ways to understand digital technology and use it in a meaningful and creative way.
Programming plays a key role here, as it is already one of the most important skills that children should learn today (and will be even more so in the future). It therefore makes sense for children to learn programming in a playful way as early as kindergarten. This can also be done without computers and technical equipment, as the basic principles of programming can be learnt and understood without technology. For example, children can use coding games to get their first programming experience in a child-friendly and fun way. Robots are also a popular medium for children to learn programming through play. They offer children a first playful approach to the world of programming and also promote logical thinking and an understanding of cause and effect.
Computer science games for children
To bring computer science closer to children, we offer a wide range of child-orientated games and educational materials. These make it easy for children to learn programming and acquire basic skills in this area of computer science.
For example, with our MatataLAB coding set, children can learn to code through play. They learn basic coding skills and develop the cognitive skills needed to understand abstract and complex rules and concatenations.
Our motor skills set ‘First Programming’ allows children to learn programming in motion. The advantage: learning through movement is easier to memorise and is also a lot of fun!
With COKO, the programmable robot crocodile, children learn the basics of programming in a simple and fun way and develop the ability to understand the relationship between cause and effect. It also promotes spatial orientation and logical thinking.
Children can solve problems and develop strategies with the ‘Coding Critters®’ programmable dragon. Kids go on magical adventures while developing logical thinking and teamwork skills - a fun way for children to learn programming!

Media and computer science in kindergarten
Media and IT systems are omnipresent in children's lives. Many pre-school children already use devices such as computers, digital TVs, smartphones and tablets very independently to play, learn or entertain themselves. This is partly due to the fact that these devices have become much easier to use in recent years. Even children who do not have their own digital devices such as mobile phones, tablets or computers live in an environment that is increasingly characterised by IT. As a result, digital education, especially in relation to media, is becoming a social responsibility, even in kindergarten. The focus is on familiarising children with digital media as a versatile tool and on using it to develop their media skills. Media education in kindergarten is therefore of great importance for the sensible and constructive use of digital media.
Skills that are strengthened as a result:
- Problem-solving skills through logical and strategic thinking
- Social skills through learning together
- Self-competence through the experience of self-efficacy
- Expertise through the acquisition of knowledge and skills
