It's Always Maths Time!

Maths already in nursery? Of course! Because maths is more than just numbers. Children ask lots of questions every day at nursery that are perfect for promoting a basic understanding of maths.

The text is organised by developmental stage and the authors present the 6 basic building blocks for mathematical understanding: sorting and classification; patterns, symmetry and geometry; spatial awareness and orientation; measuring and weighing; statistics and graphic representation; and finally counting and numbers.

For example, children can make nature mandalas in the garden, go on a treasure hunt ("When you get to the third tree, look up!"), or carry giant items that are actually very lightweight (e.g. cardboard boxes) and small, very heavy items (e.g. metallic balls). They can build things following a construction plan ("That needs to go on the front!") and test whether everyone together can surround the Wendy house.
