TimeTEX Introduction to the Decimal System "Montessori Premium"

This introduction to the decimal system (the nine game) provides a visual and physical representation of the decimal system 1 to 1,000.
The purpose of this material is to illustrate place value and demonstrate that a decimal category cannot be more than 9.

In the Montessori prepared environment, children learn the decimal system from the age of 4. This is conveyed by working with bead materials.
This version of the golden bead material is specifically about crossing tens.

The nines game introduces children to the decimal number system and offers focused practice for place value names (units, tens, hundreds, thousands).
Crossing the tens is made clear by the fact that only 9 beads fit into the bar for individual beads. There is then a logical STOP and the child experiences the transition into the next sequential place value (tens). Once this has been reached, the 10 individual beads are replaced by a tens bar. The set works in a similar way with the hundreds.

• lay out specified numbers
• clearly recognise and "grasp" crossing tens in every case
• recognise place values and naming relationships (10 units are 1 ten, 10 tens are 1 hundred, etc.)
