Physics made easy!
The magnetism science chest was developed as part of a STEM project "Magical physics with language and science chests" (at the University of Siegen, see www.zauberhafte-physik.net).
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, and this project also included a focus on Language. The projects devised in this scheme can be used both in language and science lessons.
The following are encouraged:
- Interest in physics
- Understanding of physical processes
- Reading comprehension
- Enjoyment of experimentation and reading
- Fine motor skills
- Presentation
- Action-oriented work
- Team skills
- Independence
- Creativity
- Belief in one's own abilities
Concept of magical physics with language and science chest
The magnetism module consists of the language chest "Travelling around corners (9)" and the "Magnetism science chest".
The focus in the language chest "Travelling around corners (9)" is on reading and understanding instructions for an experiment, promoting fine motor skills, and learning about magnetic properties. Based on the instructions for an experiment, children use a neodymium magnet to guide a small, ferrous object (the so-called car) around a racetrack.
At the website listed above, the following documentation is available to download free of charge for this experiment: precise content specifications for the experimental materials, three different versions of text for reading, physics information and displays.
The experimental materials for the language chest will need to be assembled by the teacher based on the content specifications.
The magnetism science chest focuses on observations and recognising the following magnetic phenomena: magnetic lines of force, magnetic attraction and repulsion, the degree to which objects can be magnetised, penetration of materials, magnetic shielding, and the Earth's magnetic field (poles). Based on team cards, the children work on eight different experiments and present them to their fellow students.
