Sniffles, coughs, sneezing, hoarseness, and even diarrhoea and vomiting are all contagious and make life difficult. But prevention is actually simple: 85 percent of all infections occur through shaking hands or touching a contaminated handle, e.g. doorknob etc.

If you want to protect yourself and others from infection, you should wash your hands several times a day to rid them of pathogenic organisms. For children it isn't always clear why they constantly have to be washing their hands and they don't take it seriously.

Simple experiments from the hygiene and disease transmission experiment box will show children how important hand washing is and how they can use this technique to protect themselves against illness.
With this Hagemann experiment box, children become little UV detectives and acquire interesting background knowledge about hygiene and disease transmission through playing.

Pathogens are often airborne droplets or transmitted via our hands. We are not usually aware of how many objects we touch in everyday life! The exciting experiments in this set teach children how important thorough hand hygiene is and how this significantly reduces the probability of infection.

The UV gel included in the box contains little particles that become visible under UV light and glow intriguingly. Explain to the children that these particles represent germs and bacteria, which collect on the surface of our hands during everyday life.

When carrying out the experiment, some of the children rub the UV gel into their hands and pass it between them. The particles are transmitted almost unnoticed from hand to hand - just like bacteria.

If you put their hands under the UV light, the gel residue lights up in a violet shade. This makes it easy to see that particles gather, especially around fingernails and in the space between fingers, which you cannot see with the naked eye. After cursory hand washing, residues will still remain.
