Demonstration video - Detailed product description
This compact wild bee nesting block is ideal for beginner beekeeping and is ready to use right away. It provides 30 nesting tubes for wild bees and the hinged lid allows you to observe the development (metamorphosis) of the red mason bees.
How the project works: you receive the breeding set, install the nesting block away from the rain and put the tub containing the cocoons on or directly next to the nesting block. Cut a hole in the side of the tub about the size of a 5 cent coin so that the hatched wild bees can leave the tub. The lid can be removed shortly after hatching has taken place and there is no longer a risk of the cocoons being eaten by birds. The wild bees will hatch out in mid-late April, sometimes even earlier if the weather is warm. However, you may store the cocoons in a cool place until late April (if necessary, even until mid-May, see below) so that you can plan a precise project start date between April and May.
The teaching materials contain lots of valuable ideas for environmentally friendly, climate-aware behaviour and to educate children about sustainable development. These ideas are flagged with the "We are protecting our earth symbol" and can be quickly identified. A worksheet on saving the environment and Earth´s climate provides data for a range of small projects on bee, environmental and climate protection, which children can implement themselves to help out and effect change.
It is possible to add further nesting boards from the 2. wild bee season onwards to the compact nesting block with cocoon hatching compartment, to give even more wild bees sufficient space to lay eggs.
