Media Booklet "Wild Bees and Honey Bees", 44 pages

Children, young people and adults often only know about one kind of bee: the honey bee. But there are many thousands of species of wild bee on earth, which play a far greater role in terms of biodiversity than the honey bee. In this media packet, pupils get an exciting insight into the world of wild bees and honey bees, and thus into a microcosm that is often hidden from us. The diversity of animal and plant species on earth is under threat. This is becoming increasingly visible in gardens and school settings. The declining bee population has recently been a recurring topic in the media. While most people understand that honey bees are dwindling in number, the death of wild bees is even more drastic. It is important to protect the honey bee! But it is equally important to draw attention to the significance and threat to wild bees and to protect these species too.

This media booklet helps by providing educational work and stimulating children's interest in protecting bees and their habitats. They will gain a better understanding about the life and needs of wild bees and honey bees and, in the process of doing this, they will develop a sense of responsibility for bees. By tackling the subject of wild bees and honey bees, students get an exciting insight into the life of a bee. They learn about their physical build, the different developmental stages and how to recognise the reproductive cycle. They will also learn about the ecological interplay between flowering plants and their pollinators, and acquire knowledge about predators, parasites and the main threat to wild bees caused by human activity.

Doing a bee project at school is always a wonderful incentive to create a natural outdoor area to attract even more wild bees and other species of insects and animals. We recommend the Hagemann seed mix butterfly meadow (product no. 80325) to go with this media booklet. This contains a diverse mix of seeds for annual and perennial wild herbs that produce lots of flowers and are rich in nectar and pollen. Pupils can plant these (e.g. in the school garden) and thus offer wild bees, honey bees, butterflies and other insects a rich and wonderful array of flowers that are packed with high-energy nectar. Sowing our butterfly and bee meadow will help encourage strong, productive insects, which in turn will pollinate fruit trees, berry bushes and lots of crops.

In addition to comprehensive factual information, the media booklet provides 18 interesting and informative worksheets/leaflets. The worksheets cover themes relating to wild bees and honey bees and have been differentiated for primary and secondary school. The media booklet also offers access to 6 digital, interactive exercises and 2 digital quizzes. They do not need to be installed and can be opened and used directly. To do this, pupils simply scan the QR code or follow the relevant link. You will be transferred directly to the correct exercise after entering the web code. Teachers can work on these together with the children using a whiteboard or projector as a fun way to expand their knowledge of bees. The exercises are easy to execute, they will motivate pupils, expand their methodological diversity and tap into additional learning channels.
