TimeTEX Smelling Bottles "Montessori Premium"

It is important that the child learns to distinguish smells, what they mean and how to react to them. The child, either wearing a blindfold or closing their eyes, smells each olfactory bottle and matches it to the control odor by performing a process of elimination.

Our sense of smell is a powerful, revolutionary tool that can trigger certain signals in the brain - be it to detect if there is danger nearby (fire) or if a food is edible or not. Be aware that smells can be dangerous. It is important that the child first asks an adult if it is safe to smell something strange before actually smelling it.

The smelling bottles are part of the Montessori sensory materials. Add a few drops of essential oils from ingredients with characteristic odors to the bottle. If you are using a solid material (e.g. mint leaf), you can also hide it in absorbent cotton, inside the bottle, unless the child is wearing a blindfold. Let the child experiment and challenge them to recognize as many smells as possible.

Learning opportunities:

  • learn and name new smells
  • identify odors and compare them using a control bottle
  • training the sense of smell
  • describing odors
  • memorize smells over a longer period of time
  • learn the importance of safety

Methodological and didactic tips:

The teacher places the smelling bottles (with yellow and white lids) on the table. They take a bottle with a yellow lid, open it and smell it carefully. They then place it in front of them and open the bottles with white lids one after the other, smell them too and compare the two odors. Once the correct odor can is found, the two are set aside together. If the smell does not match, the next bottle is compared. Once all the bottles have been placed in pairs, the color markings on the floor are used to compare whether they have been assigned correctly. The smelling bottles are then mixed and given to the child.

Variations:

  • the exercise is carried out blindfolded
  • place the bottles separately and in different rooms (the smell must be memorized over a longer period of time)

suggested materials you can use for smells include cinnamon sticks, fresh mint leaves, coffee granules, fresh cloves, vinegar, aniseed, etc.

Absorbent cotton soaked in essential oils (rose, lavender, eucalyptus, vanilla - preferably alcohol-free organic oils) are also ideal.
