The man who gave his name to this optical sensation is none other than mathematician Leonhard Euler, who studied the behaviour of spinning discs in the 18th century. You will be familiar with the phenomenon of coin spinning: if a vertical disc is rotated on one edge, it tips, wobbles and rotates for a couple of seconds before it comes to rest.

This is done to perfection with the Euler's disc. After it is spun, it gets quicker and quicker until it just appears to vibrate and it makes the noise of a turbine starting up. The spectacle comes to an abrupt end with a bang after almost 2 minutes! The cherry on the cake is the holographic magnetic film, on which the light reflections form a dizzying dance in all the colours of the spectrum.

The long period of activity is thanks to the weight of the disc. This shows how potential energy is converted into kinetic energy.
