Bernoulli Ball, 3 pcs.

The ball hovers and dances in the air. This phenomenon is explained by the Bernoulli effect. The current of air lifts the ball and flows around it, which keeps the ball in place. If you gradually reduce the air flow, the ball can land safely again. Even if you alter the angle by tilting it, the ball stays in the current of air.

Interesting information about the Bernoulli effect

We can observe the Bernoulli effect every day

  • The shower curtain that comes closer to your body when you are showering
  • The umbrella that can become turned inside out by the wind
  • In aviation, for example along the wings
  • Ships that are travelling in parallel must maintain sufficient distance from each other as otherwise they can be attracted to each other

Some other animal species, e.g. badgers, prairie dogs and termites use the Bernoulli effect to ventilate their underground burrows.
For example, with prairie dogs this works as follows: the prairie dogs construct very deep structures with two exits. For a long time, biologists were puzzled as to how the animals (between 10 - 15 depending on the size of the family) were able to ensure a supply of oxygen inside.

The trick is really simple, around one of the exits a small wall is piled up, the other one remains level. Wind along the ground flows more slowly than wind that is slightly higher. This means the air along the raised wall flows more quickly than the air at the other exit. This creates lower pressure at the wall and the stale air is sucked out of the tunnel structure while fresh air streams in at the other entrance.
