Demonstration video - Detailed product description
This version of the Cartesian diver is a colourful octopus made of plastic. Press the plastic bottle and the bottle diver will sink. As soon as you release the pressure, it rises again. If you press and release repeatedly the bottle diver will even dance. Its moving tentacles swing around as it does so.
Children and adults will immediately want to know how it works. The instructions explain how to build the bottle diver and outline the physical principles behind how it works.
What can you use it to demonstrate?
Cartesian divers graphically demonstrate the link between density and buoyancy. Talk about the properties of air, what happens when the air in the bottle is compressed and the consequence of ventilation.
You can use any standard plastic bottle for the bottle diver. We recommend a sturdy bottle that is as transparent as possible.
