- Detailed product description
The Hagemann cocoon lifter is the ideal tool for lifting bee cocoons out of the nesting tubes in the nesting block. By October, all larvae will have developed into full-sized mason bees inside their cocoons. The nesting block can now be opened, and the cocoons removed without disturbing the bees.
To achieve better results, i.e. to help a larger quantity of mason bees survive the winter, it is worth checking the brood cells for parasites. When opening the nesting block, you will soon be able to tell if any parasites have invaded. If visible larvae can be seen in the nest, these are certain to be parasites as the mason bees will already be fully developed inside their cocoons. Any nesting tubes containing parasites must be cleaned.
To properly clean the nesting block, carefully dismantle it from October onwards so that you can clean the individual nesting trays. The cocoons can be carefully lifted out of the nesting tubes using the Hagemann cocoon lifter. To do this, you place the lifter at the opening to the nesting tube and slide it forwards. This allows you to gradually lift the cocoons out of the tube. Now it is important to clean the nesting tubes thoroughly. Completely remove any old pollen residue and walls built by the bees. To do this, you can first scrape along the nesting tube with the cocoon lifter, then sweep any detritus off the boards with a brush.
The bees can hibernate during winter in their cocoons in a dry, cool place that is sheltered from the wind, such as a shed, garage or unheated basement room. In February place the cocoons back in their hatching chambers.
