Once the child can count with the Number Rods and combine quantities and symbols, the Golden Bead Material is offered as a the next step. The child learns that all quantities can be divided into groups of no more than nine individual units. They thus learn the structure of the decimal system.

The Golden Bead Material made of individual plastic beads is probably the best known and most versatile Montessori material in the field of mathematics. It illustrates the proportionality in the number range up to 9,999 using the handy units beads, ten bars with loose beads threaded on, hundred squares and thousand cubes.

The child consciously perceives the significance of ones, tens, hundreds and thousands - by counting individual beads, linking tens to form chains and stacking hundreds squares on top of each other.
