- Detailed product description
A concrete way to start learning mathematical concepts and develop this towards an abstract understanding. Organisation, coordination, concentration and independence are experienced by the child with these materials.
The material aims to teach children the names, symbols and sequence of the numbers, but from different perspectives.
Work with Seguin Boards II is centred around the numbers from 11 to 99.
The two wooden boards have 9 number slots, each labelled with 10s. The child counts up by sliding the wooden number cards 1 to 9 into these slots.
Working with Seguin boards gives the child a solid foundation in handling the decimal system. As soon as the child has mastered working with Seguin Boards 11-19 (I, available separately), they can continue with the Seguin Boards 11-99 (II).
They will also learn quantities and symbols higher than 10. This also reinforces the transfer of knowledge about concrete number sequences to abstract numbers.
A box with tens bars and unit beads to be used with this material is available separately.
Learning opportunities:
- understand the structure of tens
- practise putting numbers together
- recognise the sequence of numbers
Information on didactic method:
The teacher places the Seguin Boards on the table in front of them. The number tiles from 1 to 9 are placed below. Next s/he slides the tile with the number 1 into the top row of the board, starting from the right. The zero is now covered by the 1.
For naming the numbers, the tile is slid again so that first the 10 is visible and then the 11: "Ten plus one is eleven".
The same thing is done up to the final number tile with the nine = 19.
The next step is to work in the twenties. "Nineteen plus one is twenty, twenty plus one is twenty-one".
The exercise goes up to the number 99, after which it is handed over to the child.
Further exercise:
To make things clear and simple for the child, the box with the tens bars should definitely be used here. The exercise then looks like this:
The teacher places the Seguin boards on the table in front of them. The number tiles from 1 to 9 are placed below, with the bead material alongside.
A tens bar is placed to the left of the board, next to the 10. Then a unit bead is added: Ten plus one is eleven. Next the tile with the number 1 is slid into the top row of the board, starting from the right.
The second unit bead is added to the ten bar: One, two. 10 plus 2 is 12. The same process is followed with the remaining number tiles up to 19.
Another unit bead is added. Now the individual beads are counted "One, two ... ten". The 10 individual beads are then replaced by another ten bar. The two tens bars are placed next to the 20: "10 plus 10 is 20".
The process is then continued, as in the tens.
