This breeding kit lets you observe the development of the native two-spot ladybird from larva to full-grown insect. These fascinating observations are difficult in nature. A really insightful experience for you and the children!
This ladybird breeding set can be ordered at any time of year. The food is contained in the larvae transport container to ensure the larvae have enough to eat. There is no separate feed box. However, the live larvae will only be sent out between March and mid-October. Please note, 2-3 weeks are required for delivery of the larvae.
The breeding set contains:
- 10-15 larvae, food is contained in the larvae transport container
- breeding vivarium
- 1 Hagemann magnifying box
- commendation stickers, ladybirds, set of 228
- detailed, illustrated instructions in four colours with
- 7 copy templates (differentiated for nursery and school)
- 2 interactive exercises for tablet, PC and overhead projector or whiteboard
- More ladybird larvae can be ordered subsequently. So you can use the set again.
The teaching materials contain lots of valuable ideas for environmentally friendly, climate-aware behaviour and to educate children about sustainable development. These ideas are flagged with the "We are protecting our earth symbol" and can be quickly identified.
How do I order my breeding set?
Just order your desired set by telephone, email, fax, in writing or via our shop. Remember to specify when you want to receive your set.
Note: we always ship the larvae at the beginning of the week, otherwise they would be in transportation for an unnecessarily long period over the weekend. Consequently, larvae deliveries are usually received in the course of the week.
In terms of your planning, please remember: it takes about 1-2 weeks after receiving your ladybird larvae for them to pupate. Around 1 week later your ladybirds will emerge. You will need to plan around 30 days for the entire project.
Keeping the ladybirds: the breeding vivarium supplied provides ideal developmental conditions for the ladybird larvae to ensure lots of ladybirds emerge. Once the ladybirds have hatched, they can be kept in the vivarium for about 1 week.
Interesting fact about this variety: native two-spot ladybirds (Adalia bipunctata) are very widespread across the whole of Europe. They grow to about 3.5-5.5 mm in length and come in two varieties: red with two black spots, or black with four to six red spots. The ravenous larvae consume about 150 aphids per day. After moulting 4 times, the larvae pupate.
Remember: as in nature, it is possible that not all the larvae will survive.
If you would like to give this set as a gift, order our Hagemann butterfly gift set. That way you will receive the complete pack without larvae, and these can then be delivered on the requested date.
