The instant snow trickles softly ... with the original Steve Spangler Insta-Snow® Powder
Snow without a snow blower – and in a matter of seconds!
The powder is simply mixed with water, then stirred for approx. 30 seconds. And to make sure it feels really authentic, just put it in the refrigerator! The original Steve Spangler Insta-Snow® Powder increases in volume by a factor of up to 100 when mixed with water.
Reusable thanks to the incredible snow melt effect!
This snow can be used repeatedly because after a couple of days the water will evaporate. The powder is left behind and can be mixed with water again to make new instant snow.
Instant snow creative
The instant snow can be dyed all sorts of colours using colouring tablets (e.g. from the "Whirlpool in a bottle" (product no. 80102)) or other dyes. Design fabulous decorations, winter landscapes with snowmen and snow women plus snow lanterns.
Instant snow recipe
Mix one teaspoon of instant snow (approx. 3 g) with a large cup of water (approx. 250 ml). For powdery snow, use a bit less water, for damp snow, wet snow or slush use a bit more. Just experiment! One tin (100 g) instant snow creates about one bucket (10 litres) of artificial snow.
Instant snow for teachers
The original Steve Spangler Insta-Snow® Powder (instant snow) is a weakly cross-linked, polar, insoluble polymer (SAP, sodium polyacrylate, [-CH2-CH(CO2Na)-]n), which can bond large quantities of other polar liquids (water) inside it. This causes the polymer to swell. Since the polymer structure contains sodium ions, the molecule also develops strong salt characteristics. This enables it to absorb even more liquid (osmosis). If you conduct the experiment with pure water, even more moisture will be bound to the polymer. Non-polar liquids will not form bonds.
This offers lots of ideas for experiments relating to the topic of "super absorbers". For example, you can create salt solutions with different concentrations. You can measure the super absorber's absorption capacity depending on the salt concentration. You can also determine the gel point. In other experiments, students (Y11-13) can create their own superabsorbent polymers through the copolymerisation of acrylic acid with a cross-linking agent then compare the properties of this substance (absorption capacity, swelling volume, determining the gel point) with the properties of instant snow.

Useful information: instant snow is contained in nappies and sanitary products
There are lots of technical applications for superabsorbent polymers. They are an ideal filling for nappies or sanitary products, or they can be used as a coating on underwater cables. In pre-packed meat, you will find superabsorbent polymers in the little section of fleece fabric that remains in the packaging.
