TimeTEX Sandpaper Numerals, German "Montessori Premium"

This material has a dual purpose. First, to introduce the concept of associating a symbol with a named number by repeating it as they trace it; and to imprint the concrete sense of the shape of each number in their muscular memory as they trace the rough number, laying the foundation for writing the number.

Sandpaper Numerals are an essential part of the basic Montessori early math curriculum using Montessori sensorial materials.

At around the age of 3, the child is able to write. The Sandpaper Numerals contain the numbers 0 to 9. The numeral on each board feels like sandpaper. By tracing the numeral, the child stimulates the tactile muscles in the fingertips. Together with repeating the number out loud, this helps the child to mentally and visually recognize the shape and name of the number.

This material focuses on learning or recognizing the written symbol of the digits 1 to 9. Traditionally, zero is usually introduced with the Spindle Boxes. When children first work with concrete representations of the numbers, they absorb the information naturally with as many senses as possible. As soon as they are ready, they can work with abstract numbers.
