By touching and moving the sandpaper letters with their fingers, children recognise and learn the typical shape of letters. The letters are spoken aloud. Sandpaper letters are good for developing and training hand-eye coordination and for preparing for reading and writing.

Method - didactic information
After a variety of language games in which the child identifies the sounds of our language, the teacher selects a sandpaper letter and moves with the index and middle finger several times over the letter and the child does the same. Then the teacher speaks the letter sound, the child repeats the sound and the teacher names some words that begin with this sound. This is repeated with a 2nd and 3rd letter that are very different in sound and form. This is followed by the second and third level of the three-level lessons.

Second level/further exercises:

• the child feels familiar letters with closed eyes
• they should search for words with the initial sound
• the child takes the sandpaper letter to a child or item in the room whose name includes this sound
• small items are ordered by introductory sound, medial sound and final sound
• a child chooses a letter and calls over all the children whose names begin with that sound
• they should search for animals words beginning with "A", for example
  

Third level:
The educator asks the child for the name of the letter.
