- Detailed product description
The child learns to estimate the length and orientation with the help of the Red Rods. They use their sense of sight and touch to find out the difference between the individual rods.
The rods are painted with 3 coats of bright red, environmentally friendly paint.
The edge length of each rod is 2.5 cm, but the length varies from 10 cm to 100 cm in steps of 10 cm.
Learning opportunities:
- visually and tactilely recognize the difference in length and orientation
- naming the rods with terms such as short, long, longer etc.
- stimulate fine and gross motor muscles
- practice bilateral coordination by crossing the center line while laying out the "stairs"
- preliminary stage to work with the Number Rods
- combination work with Pink Tower and Brown Stairs
- suitable for use in kindergarten, elementary school & homeschooling
Methodological and pedagogical tips:
Of the Pink Tower, the Brown Stair and the Red Rods, the last of the three is the most difficult and should be offered last. This is because the Red Rods only differ in one dimension, namely their length.
As usual, sit next to the child on a carpet that is only 5 cm longer than the longest pole. In your demonstration, show that you look closely at the Red Rods and also feel the length. You can do the latter by touching and running your finger along the entire rod from left to right. It is important that you really feel the whole rod. When you have found the longest rod, place it at the beginning of the carpet.
Then find the next rod in the same way. Let this rest against the first rod and place the rods so that they are aligned with the left side. This is important because the same orientation is also used for the Number Rods and the numbers will then look correct.
Let the child practise and find their own mistakes. You don't teach them, you let them discover for themselves. Children who have great difficulty should be given 5 rods (take one out every now and then). A child could also start with the shortest one, but this has the disadvantage that they have to reach over their own rod that have already been put down.
There are mathematical concepts hidden in the Pink Tower, the Brown Stair and the Red Rods. For example, the smallest red rod fits 10 times into the longest red rod. The thinnest prism of the Brown Stair fits 100 times into the thickest. And the smallest cube of the Pink Tower fits 1,000 times into the largest cube of the Pink Tower.
