- Detailed product description
The Brown Stair introduces the child to size differences in three dimensions, whereby the width remains the same.
The set consists of 10 massive wooden prisms with a constant width of 20 cm. Each prism differs in thickness. The aim is for the child to arrange the prisms in the correct order to form a stair-like structure.
- made of solid beech wood, painted with environmentally friendly brown varnish
- pedagogically accurate dimensions
- 1 x 1 x 20 cm increasing in steps up to 10 x 10 x 20 cm
Learning opportunities:
- construct the staircase from all existing blocks in the right way
- relate larger and smaller steps, naming with corresponding terms
- name the prisms with terms such as thick - thin, high - low etc.
- observe and practice sequences
- estimate proportions
- combined work with the Pink Tower and the Red Rods
- possible applications: kindergarten, elementary & homeschooling
Methodological and pedagogical tips:
Mix the prisms. Keep the largest prism with all the other prisms before placing it on the left-hand side. Or demonstrate how to look closely at the measurements with the eyes before selecting and putting down the largest prism. When a child touches the prisms from above, he or she experiences the thickness very well. They will not be able to do this with the thickest prisms. When the row is finished, place the thinnest one on top of the second largest one and feel!
Variation: build vertically
The Brown Stair is more difficult than the Pink Tower. This is because there are only two different dimensions in the brown staircase, whereas there are three in the Pink Tower (length-width-height).
After the child has worked with the Pink Tower and the Brown Stair separately, you can invite the child to work with Brown Stair and the Pink Tower together. The child can then discover that the square sides of the Brown Stair fit the sides of the Pink Tower. It is important to let the child discover this for themselves.
For children who have difficulty turning over a set such as the Brown Stair and the Pink Tower, do not give them all the cubes, but only 5 pieces, which you take out of the set in turn and do not use (i.e. the largest one you use, the second largest one you do not turn over, and so on).
