- Detailed product description
The Pink Tower is a set of 10 wooden cubes that promote visual discrimination of sizes in 3 dimensions. Working with this material prepares the child for mathematical concepts in the decimal system, geometry and volume.
Learning opportunities:
- stack the cubes on top of each other to form a harmonious tower
- recognize proportions
- name the cubes with terms such as bigger - smaller, heavier - lighter etc.
- combination work with brown stairs and red rods
- possible applications: kindergarten, elementary & homeschooling
Methodological and pedagogical tips:
The Pink Tower is always offered on a work mat. This is because if you set it up around the table, the child cannot reach the top. When you introduce the Pink Tower, first shuffle the cubes on the right-hand side of the carpet (chaos), i.e. in front of you on the carpet. Then start building the tower in front of the child (order).
Show the child how to pick up a cube, hands at the sides, flat, and hold it next to another cube (or several) and compare before placing it concentrically on the tower. Place the cube very precisely. If you start fiddling with the cube after putting it down, the children will think this is part of the exercise.
Variation: Build the tower from large to small, but now in the corner. Demonstrate that you can place the smallest cube in the corner of each cube and then drag the cube to the other corner. You need both hands to do this. The child can now see that there is a centimeter difference between the cubes on two sides. This can be shown with the smallest cube. Place this cube on all the layers one after the other. The tower is light pink so that the differences in size are easy to see.
Variation: Build horizontally: Place the smallest cube next to the largest and let it run downwards. It is not necessary to give the children photos or pictures of constructions that can be built with the brown staircase and the Pink Tower. Fun crafts with Christmas trees, Santa boats and Easter bunnies can be left out. Making combinations and patterns can be left up to the child.
The idea is for the children to discover for themselves what is possible with the Pink Tower. The mere hint that a child can combine 2 materials is incentive enough. Sometimes taking into account the dimensional differences, sometimes not. If a child wants to build a pirate ship by placing all the wooden boxes with the colored cylinders on their side, this encourages the development of their creativity much more than if we give instructions or suggestions.
Children like to build with the Pink Tower and the Brown Stair. You can set a rule that a child can build as high as they can reach without a chair. This helps with safety.
Further exercises with the Pink Tower:
- outline the cubes, cut them out or pin them up and stick them on
