TimeTEX Seguin Boards I, 11-19 "Montessori Premium"

A concrete way to start learning mathematical concepts and develop this towards an abstract understanding. The materials offer children ways to experience organisation, coordination, concentration and independence.

The material aims to teach children the names, symbols and sequence of the numbers, but from different perspectives.

Work with Seguin Boards I is centred around the numbers from 11 to 19. The numbers 11 to 19 are particularly difficult for a child to learn, as their names are more complicated than those in the rest of the number system.

The two wooden boards have 9 number slots, each labelled with 10s. The child counts up by sliding the wooden number cards 1 to 9 into these slots.

Working with Seguin Boards gives the child a solid foundation in handling the decimal system. It also teaches quantities and symbols higher than 10 (Seguin Boards I: numbers 11-19, and Seguin Boards II: numbers 11-99, available separately).
This also reinforces the transfer of knowledge about concrete number sequences to abstract numbers.

A box with a coloured bead stair and tens bars to be used with this material is available separately.

Learning opportunities:

  • understand the structure of tens
  • practise putting numbers together
  • recognise the sequence of numbers

Information on didactic method:

The teacher places the Seguin Boards on the table in front of them. The number tiles from 1 to 9 are placed below. Next s/he slides the tile with the number 1 into the top row of the board, starting from the right. The zero is now covered by the 1.
For naming the numbers, the tile is slid again so that first the 10 is visible and then the 11: "Ten plus one is eleven".
The same thing is done up to the final number tile. Then the board is handed over to the child.

Further exercise:
Add the "Box with Bead Material" (available separately). The teacher points to a number and asks: "How many beads should there be here?"
